*As of January 1st, 2025, for a heat pump system to qualify for NYSERDA Clean Heat Rebates, the system must be able to heat the entire home at temperatures as low as -10 degrees outside. Partial systems that do not cover the entire home at this standard do not currently qualify for rebates. Visit CleanHeat.NY.Gov for more information.
How a Heat Pump Works
A heat pump works just like an air conditioner does, only in reverse. Even when it’s really cold out, there is still some amount of heat energy in the outside air. Because the outdoor air still has more heat energy than the cold refrigerant, the refrigerant absorbs that heat from the outdoors and moves it indoors.
Ductless “Mini-Split” Systems
Commonly referred to as a mini split, these air-source ductless heat pump systems are our most requested system. The heated or cooled air can be delivered indoors through air handlers that hang on the wall, sit on the floor or mount in the ceiling. Each air handler can be set at a different temperature, but all them that are connected to the same outdoor condenser must be on the same mode of either heating or cooling.

Ducted Heat Pump Systems
Ducted Heat Pump Systems heat and cool the air just like a ductless mini split system. The difference is a ducted system uses an indoor air handler similar to a furnace to blow the indoor air over thin tubes of hot or cold gas. The system’s ductwork then passes the hot or cold air through the entire home until it reaches the thermostat’s set temperature.
